Eliminate Sources of Moisture: Key to Stopping Cockroaches and Ants

Did you know a cockroach can go weeks without food but only days without water? That's why leaks and damp corners work like an open bar for them. In Costa Rica, with the ambient humidity, any drip or condensation makes the problem worse. The good news: checking and drying out a few key spots usually gets fast results. The EPA recommends eliminating sources of water and moisture as part of integrated pest management. Here's where to look and what to do. Pair this with cleaning and kitchen and bathroom prevention; if there's already an infestation, a professional can treat hidden shelters.

Checking pipes and fixing leaks reduces the water available to pests.
Key idea

A steady drip is enough to attract pests. Fix leaks as soon as you spot them.

Where to check (and what to do)

  • Under the sink: check the pipes, joints, and drain. A leak you can't see can soak the cabinet and attract cockroaches. Fix it right away and dry the area well.
  • Bathrooms: after showers, dry the floors and walls; check faucets, the toilet supply line, and drains. A leaking toilet or a dripping shower is a moisture source running 24/7.
  • Washing machine and laundry area: check behind and under the washer; check tanks and water heaters. Old hoses often leak without anyone noticing.
  • Ventilation: open windows or use extractor fans in the bathroom and kitchen. Less condensation means less moisture on walls and in corners.
  • Refrigerator: the drip tray at the back sometimes clogs or collects water; clean it out now and then.

Extra tip

In very humid areas (the coast, constant rain), a dehumidifier can bring humidity below 50%, a much less favorable level for cockroaches. You don't need to run it all day: a few hours in the most humid rooms already helps.

When to call a professional

If there are already a lot of cockroaches, or they keep coming back after cleaning and drying, they likely have shelters inside walls or under floors. Professional treatment can reach those spots. EcoPlagas serves the Greater Metropolitan Area.
