Cockroach Prevention in the Kitchen and Bathroom
The kitchen and bathroom are the "perfect combo" for cockroaches: water, food (or organic matter), and plenty of hiding spots. It's no coincidence that's where we see them most in Costa Rica. The good news: with a zone-by-zone approach and a few clear habits, you can make these areas much less attractive. If you're already seeing signs of cockroaches, combine these tips with cleaning and less moisture, and consider professional control when you need it.

Kitchen: what to do (and why)
- Clean the kitchen and oven after use; remove grease and cooking residue. Built-up grease is both food and shelter for pests.
- Move the fridge and microwave once in a while to clean behind and underneath. That's where crumbs and moisture build up where you can't see them.
- Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight. Cockroaches are most active at night, and a plate with leftovers is an open invitation.
- Drawers and cabinets: keep utensils and food organized; avoid piling up bags or boxes that create dark corners for them to hide in.
- Sink drain: if you've already seen cockroaches, covering the drain at night can help; they sometimes come in through the pipes.
Bathroom: moisture and hiding spots
- Dry the sink, shower, and floors after use. Check that faucets aren't dripping; a constant drip keeps the area damp.
- Use trash cans with lids and empty them often. Don't leave cotton swabs or organic waste exposed.
- Check behind the toilet and under the sink; seal cracks in tile or baseboards. Those gaps make ideal hiding spots.
A nighttime trick
Since cockroaches are most active at night, before bed you can do a "kitchen closedown": put away anything with crumbs or leftovers, dry the countertop, cover the sink drain if you've already seen cockroaches, and make sure the trash can is closed. That cuts off the "menu" during the hours they're most active.
Cleaning, less moisture, and sealed cracks add up to a much less attractive kitchen and bathroom. If you already have a heavy infestation, professional control can treat hidden refuges.
