Dengue in Costa Rica 2026: The Ministry of Health Is Fumigating House to House; Here's What You Can Do Today
Costa Rica has logged 1,411 dengue cases so far in 2026, and the Ministry of Health is keeping up fumigation operations and house-to-house visits to contain outbreaks, according to Infobae, reporting in early July. The backdrop is heavy: the country has been under a dengue health alert since 2023, and 2024 was the worst dengue year on record for the Americas region according to PAHO, with Costa Rica among the highest years in its own history. The good news: 90% of the solution is eliminating breeding sites, and you can do that this very week. Here's the practical guide.
- The dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti) breeds in clean standing water, in and around your house.
- A 10-minute weekly check: containers, tires, gutters, plants sitting in water, pet water bowls.
- Fumigation kills adult mosquitoes; without eliminating breeding sites, new ones show up within days.
- During the rainy season (May to November) the risk spikes: it's the time to be most disciplined.
The most common breeding sites in Costa Rican homes
- Clogged gutters: accumulated leaves dam up clean water. Clear them at the start of the rainy season and check them monthly.
- Old tires: the classic breeding site. Get rid of them, or store them under a roof with no water.
- Containers and clutter in the yard: buckets, empty pots, toys, lids. Turn anything that collects water upside down or store it under a roof.
- Plant saucers and plants in water: change the water every 3-4 days or use damp sand in the saucers.
- Pet water bowls and sinks: scrub them with a brush (eggs stick to the walls) at least once a week.
- Tanks and drums: cover them with a tight lid or fine mesh.
- Bottles, cans, and exposed trash: a bottle cap's worth of water is enough to breed mosquitoes.
Why fumigating without eliminating breeding sites doesn't work
Fogging kills adult mosquitoes, but the eggs and larvae in the water survive, and Aedes eggs can last months in dry conditions waiting for the next rain. Businesses, schools, and condos: check your common areas
The Ministry's operations also prioritize common sites like parks and schools. If you manage a business, a condo, or a school, the critical points are: gutters on large roofs, playground tires, storage rooms full of clutter, storm drains, and planters.
